Always on My Mind, 2024, film
Always on My Mind speculates on the future of neurotechnology, beginning with Elon Musk’s Neuralink implant in a quadriplegic patient in 2024. Musk suggests that, eventually, humans may communicate through brain-to-brain interfaces, bypassing language. Felstead and Leung stage this speculative future through the figure of Nicki Minaj, imagined as a master linguist and cultural commentator. The work blends satire and critique, exploring the ethical, social, and bodily implications of “consensual telepathy.” By linking neuro-extractivism with the devaluation of words themselves, the piece questions what might be lost when language is replaced by thought exchange. Playful yet unsettling, Always on My Mind exposes the tensions between exploitation and identity in neurotechnological futures.
